152 films, 34 programmes, 40 screenings. The quantity is the picture, and the record is the only image.
On the poster: the name knocked out of a block of ink, and beneath it the five days as five bands of equal area, each set at whatever size fills its band exactly — Wednesday’s one screening at forty point, Saturday’s seventy-eight at five — so the darkness of a band is the amount of festival in it. On the mark: the record cut away by the letters, or allowed only inside them. Beside both, the same setting at its own size, because it has to be a document as well as a surface.
There is no image on this poster. The layout is the grid and the content is the record: forty thousand letters set cell by cell, each one given the weight of the picture underneath it, so the still arrives out of the programme rather than being laid on top of it. The distortion is counted, not drawn — every letter is displaced by a number belonging to its own film, and the run of the whole programme is the algorithm that warps the picture. Drag the picture; the letters follow. Colour can be counted too.
