Annual rule / Year one
Pulling focus

Nothing arrives sharp. Focus is information: what is in it is what you are being asked to look at.

How the rule behaves
  1. There is one plane of focus at a time. Bringing a thing into focus takes something else out of it, so the question is never how it looks but which thing matters.
  2. Blur is optical, not atmospheric. It is depth and distance, never mood, and it is measured: a number of millimetres out, not a feeling.
  3. The still is degraded, never restyled. It is taken out of focus, screened down to a few tones, or reduced to two inks — and it is never retouched, cropped for prettiness or filtered.
  4. The record stays sharp. Times, codes, titles and access information never leave the plane of focus, because the festival cannot afford to be unreadable about the facts.
  5. Focus snaps. In motion it pulls between two planes and cuts; it does not drift, and nothing eases.

The mark and the poster, out of focus

One tool for both treatments. The still goes out of focus, through an ordered screen at two to eight tones, and down to two inks of your choosing; the mark blurs by its own amount over it; a pane of frosted glass carries the record, which stays sharp. Pick any of the 152 films and pull the focus on it.
