The still

Focus is information. What is sharp is what you are being asked to look at, and everything else is out of the plane — so blur is never atmosphere here, it is a statement about which thing matters. The still is degraded rather than restyled: taken out of focus, screened down to a few tones, or reduced to two inks. The record — times, codes, the name of the film — never leaves focus, because the festival cannot afford to be unreadable about the facts.
