The five days

One colour to a day, five days, a new scheme each year: the only thing that carries over is the rule. Down the outside of every page runs the whole festival as a ruler of film numbers, and the films printed on that page are marked on it in the colour of the day they screen. The marks bleed off the trim, so the shut book shows the programme on its edge before it is opened, and a reader can find a film by its number without a contents page. Colour is never laid over a still: it lands on the index, where it means something.
